I hunt in a very sparsely populated area in Montana
located at the Northeast corner of the state. The
hunt takes place near Fort Peck Reservoir, which is
bordered by the Charles M. Russell Refuge,
surrounded by the Bureau of Land Management land,
which is known as the Missouri River Breaks. My
hunting area encompasses approximately 8.5 million
acres. Over the past years I have been offering
three different hunting trips.
As is with all of my
hunts, lodging, great food, experienced friendly
guides, and trophy handling will be taken care of
for you. All you need to bring are a few personal
items and a desire to enjoy hunting at its best. I
am sure that I have answered some of your questions
about what I offer. I am also aware that there is a
lot more questions that must be going through your
head. I would welcome the opportunity to answer
these questions for you, and to talk to you
personally. Please call me toll free at (800)

ARCHERY ELK HUNT
“Carl Mann’s
Montana’s
Experience Outfitters” offers one of the West’s premier Archery
Elk Hunts. This hunt generally runs the 1st week of
September which is the opening week of Montana’s archery
season. You will likely see bulls every day and we hope to be
able to “cow talk” one of those majestic animals into archery
range. Hunting elk out on the Great Plains where elk once
roamed freely is still a reality in Montana. This hunt is not
your typical Elk hunt which occurs in most of the Rockies. This
hunt is in the Missouri River Breaks. Although there is timber,
sage brush, and large Juniper bushes this is still very wide
open country, which allows us to be able to spot and stalk Elk.
Drawing a Missouri River Breaks Elk tag is one of Montana’s most
valued tags. Most opportunities will be shots at a mature 6 x 6
bull. Also at this time, if you receive a combination elk tag
you will be able to chase trophy mule deer. This combination
hunt is hard to beat. If youare an avid archer this is the hunt for you. This
is a limited quota hunt. The state has allotted me 5 permits
each year and they go very fast. We are generally booked 1 to 2
years in advance. It is worth the wait.
MULE DEER/ANTELOPE COMBINATION HUNT
This hunt comes at a time of year when the
weather is generally nice. This is an excellent
opportunity to score a big antelope buck. The mule
deer bucks at this time of year will vary in size.
This hunt takes place in the early part of the
rifle-hunting season and I find that the bucks tend
to run in bachelor groups. Those hunters who are
willing to work and hold out usually take 4x4’s.
After you have filled your big game tags, there is
bird hunting available. There are ample quantities
of pheasants, sharptail grouse, hungarian partridge,
sagehens and assorted waterfowl. To test your
shooting skills, I also have coyote and prairie dog
hunting available with this hunt.
TROPHY MULE DEER
This hunt coincides with the mating season at the
peak of the rut for the bucks of the Missouri River
breaks. This hunt is for the discriminate mule deer
hunter who would like to hang a trophy buck on the
wall. At this time of year the big bucks seem to
come out of their hiding places and make themselves
available as they move all day long across the
prairie in search of does in heat. The bucks are
more plentiful and are very visual. Your chances of
taking a wall hanging 4x4 or 5x5 are 90-100%. I can
put you within 225 yards, standing broadside to one
of these magnificent bucks.
There are 17,000 licenses that are reserved for out
of state hunters. From that total, there are 5,600
set aside for hunters who book with outfitters for
Elk combination licenses and 2,000 for Deer tags
only. The special outfitters preference can be
obtained only after sending a deposit to an
outfitter, who will send you the “Outfitter’s
Certification” form that you must include when you
return your license to the Montana
Department of
Fish, Wildlife and Parks. It would be a good idea to
contact the department at 1-406-444-2950 in Helena,
Montana in order that you can be placed in their
mailing list when license applications become
available.
